Dark and Darker’s brutal gameplay takes players through loot-filled dungeons and monstrous encounters. And as fun as the hardcore PvPvE treasure hunter is, it’s one of the hardest indie games out there. There are plenty of reasons why (extremely deadly encounters, traps, other players), but one that stands out the most is that you aren’t given a tutorial on how to escape dungeons.

All Dark and Darker Extraction Points
Each map has sub-maps (except Frost Mountain) which are randomly chosen when you enter a game. These share the same aesthetic but have extraction points in different locations.
Extraction points in Dark and Darker become available halfway into a game. They are as follows:
- Rope – single-player escapes that leave you vulnerable to attack.
- Stairs – single-player extracts indicated by blue torches (extinguished when used).
- Lifts – lever-activated extracts that can carry multiple players on them.
- Rafts – wooden rafts that circle a flooded chamber before leaving around the 3-minute mark.
- Portal – short, three-sided stone pillars with blue markings. Activating one side summons a portal.
Dark and Darker extractions vary from simple elevators to rafts and ropes that lead to the surface. The most common are torch-lit stairways leading out of the map. Here’s each map in Dark and Darker, and where to find each exit type.
The Goblin Caves
This dank network of caves is where bloodthirsty goblins have made their makeshift home. Adventurers must be wary of spiders, skeletons and traps when entering this subterranean complex.
The Goblin Caves have three sub-maps. The first three have 3×3 chambers and the fourth is a large 5×5 complex.

The Frost Mountain
Harsh cold, white wolves and giant berserkers stalk these icy caverns. If you haven’t been killed by the goblins or the falling stalactites, a winged denizen awaits in its lowest chamber.
While this map is the hardest on average for new players, it features the most Portal exits, magical pillars that can get your whole team out. But it’ll be a race to see which teams use them first.
The Ruins of Forgotten Castle
Abandoned stone halls of unclaimed loot tempt adventurers far and wide. But this fallen bastion holds a secret darker than its lightless halls.
This is by far the biggest map in Dark and Darker with six 5×5 maps. On top of that, Ruins of Forgotten Castle 4-6 have similar 4×4 “quad” variants for solo and duo games.
