The Crew Motorfest, Ubisoft’s competitor to the Forza Horizon franchise (and soon, Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown), launches its fourth ‘season’ of in-game events today, and it’s a big one, adding 29 new vehicles to the game between now and October.
At the heart of the update is a focus on custom car culture, and to begin with, this will be dominated by two things: lowriders and donks. Lowriders, you’re likely familiar with – originating in the Hispanic communities of Los Angeles, they tend to be big, body-on-frame American cars with intricate paintjobs and trick hydraulic suspension systems that allow them to ‘dance’ on the spot.
Donks, meanwhile, take a similar visual approach, but what separates them are the fitment of ridiculously massive wheels – often upwards of 30 inches. These will be pitted against one another in a playlist running between now and mid-August, which even includes a lowrider dancing minigame – fond memories of GTA: San Andreas await.
Joining the car roster as part of this playlist are a couple of iconic cars from within these subcultures, the 1987 Buick GNX and 1971 Chevrolet Caprice, as well as lowrider and donk versions of some of the game’s existing classic American metal.
From August, there’ll be a switch to a focus on off-road racing, followed by JDM tuning culture, and some tie-ins with notable brands from the custom car scene, including Liberty Walk and Yiannimize.
Supplementing all this will be custom versions of a number of cars already in the game, but there is some brand-new metal arriving, too. Entirely new to The Crew franchise are the Ford Mustang Dark Horse and Audi RS6 Avant. Three Jaguars (the D-Type, XE Project 8 and XJ220), two Maseratis (the Levante Trofeo and 1969 Ghibli) and the awesome Mazda RX-7 Group B rally car all return from The Crew 2.
Including all the custom variants, that’s some 29 new cars being added to the game between now and 6 November, which should help keep things reasonably fresh as Forza Horizon 5 also receives continual updates and TDU Solar Crown finally arrives (maybe).
There’s plenty more to come from the title, too, as Season 5 will see the Hawaiian island of Maui added as a whole second map in addition to the current setting of O’ahu.
