The Los Angeles Dodgers have reportedly had discussions with the St. Louis Cardinals regarding utility man Tommy Edman, per The Athletic’s Fabian Ardaya and Ken Rosenthal.
Edman, who can play both shortstop and centerfield, has yet to make his season debut for the Cardinals after undergoing offseason wrist surgery and spraining his ankle during his rehab.
The 29-year-old tied his career home runs last season with 13, also adding 47 RBI while recording a .248 batting average. He’s currently on a rehab assignment with Double-A Springfield, where he has collected six hits and four RBI in 24 at-bats.
Edman is under contract through next season, so if either the Dodgers or Yankees decide to make a play for him, they will get him for at least another year.
If he’s able to return soon, Edman could be a good fit for the Dodgers, who have taken several injury blows to their lineup this year. Mookie Betts, Max Muncy, Miguel Rojas and Chris Taylor have all missed time with a variety of injuries, so Los Angeles is searching for some depth. A switch hitter like Edman could be a big pickup.
For New York, Edman would give the team more depth in the infield and add another solid hitter to a lineup that relies heavily on Aaron Judge and Juan Soto. The addition of Jazz Chisholm Jr. will certainly aid the lineup, but bringing in another piece could help the Yankees as they look to make a deep postseason run.
