Fatal Shooting at McClymonds Alumni Picnic in Oakland

The Oakland Police Department held a press conference on Sunday to provide details about a deadly shooting that occurred during a picnic organized by the McClymonds Alumni Action Committee in West Oakland. The incident took place at DeFremery Park, near the 1600 block of Adeline Street, at approximately 7:30 p.m. on Saturday evening.

Deputy Chief Frederick Shavies revealed that the victim, an alumnus of McClymonds High School, tragically lost his life just two days before his 39th birthday. The police have not yet disclosed the victim’s identity or the motive behind the shooting. This incident marks the 70th homicide in Oakland this year.

Shavies stated that the shooting occurred at the center of the park, where community members from multiple generations had gathered to celebrate. Although investigators suspect the involvement of multiple shooters, no further details were provided. Fortunately, no other individuals attending the crowded and family-friendly event were harmed.

During a separate press conference on Sunday morning, Mayor Sheng Thao expressed her condolences and solidarity with the victims. She extended her thoughts and prayers not only to the victim’s family but also to those who experienced terror during the incident. Mayor Thao emphasized that violence has no place in Oakland and condemned the act of taking someone’s life during a celebration.

Following the shooting, community members and volunteers came together to clean up the park, which was left in disarray. Mayor Thao announced that grief counseling services would be made available to those affected by the traumatic event. She also acknowledged the presence of community leaders in the city and highlighted the resources provided by grief counselors.
