Dak Prescott’s season is reportedly over.
The Dallas Cowboys starting quarterback is planning to undergo season-ending surgery on a hamstring injury he suffered in last week’s loss to the Atlanta Falcons, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter. According to Schefter, the surgery would sideline him for months and end his season.
Amid the news of Prescott’s injury, fans have given their vote for who the next starter should be. On social media, fans called for Trey Lance to get the nod under center over seventh-year quarterback Cooper Rush.

And there it is.
Dak Prescott done for 2024.
Dallas should at least see what Trey Lance can do, otherwise seems like a waste of a 4th round pick. But it’ll probably be Cooper Rush https://t.co/GywFaNwzak

It’s organizational malpractice if they don’t start Trey Lance the rest of the season. See what he’s got. If he’s bad… great. Secure a top 10 pick. https://t.co/NvAzitmNPP

Sad news about Dak Prescott but I hope Trey Lance gets an opportunity to showcase his talent and gets signed by another team in the offseason who can give him a chance to start. #Cowboys #TreyLance

Cowboys just need to play Trey Lance and see if he’ll ever live up to his draft spot and potential. No better time than now. Huge upside if the lightbulb goes off for Lance. https://t.co/djguuW1tAE
The Cowboys have a tough decision to make now that they know they’ll be without Prescott the rest of the way.
Rush has more experience both in the NFL and in Dallas’ offense as he served as Prescott’s backup for a while now. He’s appeared in 27 games over the course of his career, throwing for 1,786 passing yards, nine touchdowns and six interceptions.
Lance, on the other hand, has played in just eight games and has not seen the field during the regular season since 2022. In his eight appearances, all of which came with the San Francisco 49ers, Lance had 797 passing yards, five touchdowns and three interceptions along with 235 rushing yards and a touchdown on the ground.
The Cowboys dropped to 3-5 with Sunday’s loss and would need a strong second half of the season to make a playoff push. Given those circumstances, it’s not much of a high-risk situation, so it could be worth letting Lance get some experience under his belt.
