Katie Taylor ‘very, very confident’ as Serrano rematch approaches

Ireland’s Katie Taylor is confident of repeating her April 2022 win over Amanda Serrano when they rematch on Friday in Texas.

Taylor, the undisputed lightweight and super lightweight champion of the world, will rematch more than two years after their historic first meeting in New York’s Madison Square Garden in a fight regarded by many as the biggest women’s boxing match in history. On that occasion, it was Taylor who claimed the split decision victory over the seven-weight world champion Puerto Rican Serrano — and she says that she is expecting a similar outcome on Friday inside the the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

“The result is going to be the same. I’m very, very confident,” Taylor said this week. “We’re both stepping into the ring very confident I’m sure. I believe I’m just a better fighter and the best of me always beats the best of Amanda.”

Taylor’s imprint on the female boxing game is legendary. Coming out of one of the most successful amateur careers in history which saw her win the world championships on five occasions, her career amateur medal record stands at 18 golds and 1 bronze — including Olympic gold at the 2012 Games in London.

But ahead of the fight, Taylor also paid tribute to her opponent Serrano who has forged her own path to the summit of the sport.

“I’m just so glad that I made history with Amanda because I feel like nobody has done what she’s done in women’s boxing,” said Taylor. “A seven-weight world champion, that’s just unprecedented. I don’t think any other female fighter will accomplish what she’s accomplished.”

For her part, Serrano said that she intends to go one step further after her close defeat two-and-a-half years ago.

“I’m going in there extra confident for this fight because I thought I needed just a little more to get the victory in the first fight, but it’s great to have a great dance partner like Katie Taylor,” she said.

“We’re going to go out there and show the world that women can fight, put on a show and it’s going to be a great night. I think the fans are definitely the winners in this fight.”
