The boxing world is alive with murmurs again about a potential skirmish between former undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez and former undisputed welterweight champion Terence Crawford. However, this time, Crawford’s backers were forced to realize the harsh reality of Crawford’s situation.
‘Bud’ last appeared in the ring against Israil Madrimov in August, securing a hard-fought unanimous decision win. While he managed to secure a win, it was the flattest performance from the Nebraska native in his first bout at 154 pounds. Many questioned his abilities at higher weight classes, where the potential Canelo fight would go down.

Coming back to the latest chatter, Mo Boxing No Problem revealed “talks to stage Canelo Alvarez vs. Terence Crawford at the Raiders’ Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas are underway.” Previously, His Excellency Turki Alalshikh had reached out to Canelo’s team to set up a fight between him and Crawford.
However, the fight fell apart when Alalshikh claimed Canelo had demanded unrealistic numbers for the fight. This turned into a public back-and-forth between the duo through social media and interviews. In the end, the potential fight seemed far-fetched and out of reach. But, according to Mo Boxing No Problem, “Turki Alalshikh is involved” in the fight talks.
Regardless, Canelo Alvarez secured two easy wins this year against Jaime Munguia and Edgar Berlanga. Since then, there haven’t been any updates on who he may fight next besides the latest Crawford clash. Anyway, when the fans discovered the news on Instagram, they had a lot to say about the potential fight.
Fan refuses to believe without proof
The update was bound to meet with some skepticism online, given how Canelo has rejected the fight time and time again. Like this user, who outright asked for proof. “Won’t believe it till we get a presser or sum,” the user wrote. However, as of the time of writing, there is no solid evidence about the potential fight other than some chatter.
Another user quickly realized the harsh reality where Crawford will have to fight Canelo at 168 pounds, as the user tried to criticize the Mexican superstar. “If Canelo is so great, why would he not meet him at a more reasonable weight instead of having him come up so many weight classes,” the user wrote. Notably, Canelo has shown little enthusiasm for this matchup, likely because it offers minimal rewards for him. Even with a victory, facing Crawford—a fighter from a lower weight class—would do little to enhance his legacy, as the achievement might not be widely recognized.

The next user seemed to understand the point. “Crawford is moving up 2 weight divisions to fight the top guy in that division. Cmon bruh he only had 1 fight at 154lb. This does nothing for Canelo but everything for Crawford,” the user wrote. Not to forget, ‘Bud’ just wants this fight, so he can retire from the sport with a huge paycheck.
Someone else explained why Crawford is the one moving up in weight. “Crawford calling him out. Canelo is champ at 168, if you call someone out you go up to where they fight. Simple as that,” the user wrote. Plus, it’s worth noting that Crawford is the one who wants this fight, Canelo can’t care less, since he is pulling eyes regardless of his opponents.

Meanwhile, this user shared his prediction for the fight. “I got Canelo, only bc he’s so huge compared to Bud. bud felt the weight of Madrimov and Canelo weighs like 190 on fight night,” the user wrote. Notably, Crawford is not the first one to traverse weight classes to fight Canelo. Previously, Amir Khan climbed to fight Canelo and was met with a grim realization.
That said, it appears some Terence Crawford fans seem iffy about whether he should fight Canelo Alvarez at 168. Despite that, the majority of fans seem excited about the fight. Do you think Canelo and Crawford would ever fight?
