Viral Conspiracy Theory Claims Fog Is a Chemical Weapon

Fogvid-24 is a new conspiracy theory doing the rounds online, and it’s a doozie! People are claiming that the thick fog engulfing parts of the US these days is a man-made chemical weapon.

In the first days of 2025, large parts of the United States were blanketed by a “mysterious” that made some people experience strange smells, breathing problems, and unexplained fatigue. Viral videos of people shining their flashlights into the fog at night to show “unusually large particles” have been shared thousands of times on social media platforms like X and TikTok, sparking fears that this was no ordinary fog but a chemical-filled biological weapon. Some conspiracy theorists have linked the fog to the mysterious drone sightings around the country, while others reported a high number of chemtrails in the sky just before the fog set in.

“Described as a thick, lingering blanket, the fog has left people sick—many experiencing sudden cold or flu-like symptoms after only brief exposure,” one person wrote on X. “Dubbed ‘Fogvid-24,’ some victims have also reported an unexplained loss of energy.”

“Within about an hour, I kept sneezing over and over for about three hours, and my eyes were really puffy,” one Florida resident told the Daily Mail. “I got very warm and I felt like I had a fever, and my stomach was cramping.”

According to one X post, the bizarre, sulfur-like smell and burning sensation in your nose can only be explained by the Government dumping “a bunch of microbes on the country this week, in the form of fog.”

Fortunately, there are scientific explanations for most, if not all these conspiracy theories. Fog is a cloud of water droplets or tiny ice crystals that forms close to the Earth’s surface when it reaches its dew point (maximum water saturation). That explains why these particles are visible when a strong beam of light is cast on them, especially at night.

As for the strange chemical smells, it’s a known fact that the water particles in fog tend to absorb pollutants and other particles in the air, so it’s not that uncommon for it to contain man-made chemicals, especially in polluted areas. Finally, fog is known to cause breathing difficulties and throat irritation due to the high humidity and those tiny ice crystals can give you a sore throat if you breathe through your mouth instead of your nose.
