Comparing the Chiefs and Eagles by offensive positions

The Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs are set to face off in Super Bowl LIX, and it should be fun. This matchup is not much of a surprise, and looking at the rosters, there is no question why these teams are in the Super Bowl. Knowing who will win this game is nearly impossible to predict, but the one thing we can do is see which team has the roster with the better offensive positions.

Quarterback

This one is relatively easy. Jalen Hurts has grown as a quarterback and has been a reason why the Eagles are currently in the Super Bowl, but 2024 was not a great season for him. Hurts only had 2,900 passing yards and 18 passing touchdowns this past regular season. Compared to Mahomes’ 3900 passing yards and 26 passing touchdowns, Hurts didn’t impact the air as much. Regarding rushing stats, he has 300 more rushing yards than Mahomes, and comparing touchdown totals, Hurts had 14 rushing touchdowns while Mahomes had 2. Many of these rushing touchdowns were from the Tush Push play that the Eagles have mastered. Going away from stats, the Eagles have not had to rely on Jalen Hurts much in 2024/25. Saquan Barkley has been the X-factor of this offense, and OC Kellen Moore has put Hurts in a scheme that keeps the young quarterback comfortable. These things shouldn’t take away from Hurts as a quarterback, but Patrick Mahomes can and will take over games, and it is the X factor for the Chiefs.

Running Back

Like with QB, this is an easy decision. In 2024/25, Saquon Barkley has had an MVP season and is arguably the most impactful player in the NFL. The Eagles use a run-heavy offense and are one of the top rushing teams in the NFL. At any point in a game, Saquon can run for a 70-yard touchdown and completely change the outcome. He is the offense, allowing Jalen Hurts to not play like a hero. On the Chiefs side, Isiah Pacheco is RB1, but since his injury, Pacheco’s involvement in the offense has diminished. Kareem Hunt has taken the bulk of the workload, but the Chiefs are much more of a passing team.

Wide Receiver

The Chiefs have had wide receiver issues over the past years, and due to Patrick Mahomes being the best QB in the NFL, it has not been a big issue. Still, Kansas City went into the offseason with the goal of improving the wide receiver room, and they did by drafting Xavier Worthy. Worthy has had an up-and-down season, but throughout the playoffs, he has become a consistent weapon in offense. On the Eagles side, they have two wide receivers that can take over the game. A.J. Brown is one of the best receivers in the league, and Devonta Smith can take over a game at any point.

Tight End

Travis Kelce has been the consistent top weapon for Patrick Mahomes since the departure of Tyreek Hill. Even when Hill was on the team, Kelce performed when needed and made some spectacular plays. Besides Patrick Mahomes, Kelce is the most crucial piece of this offense, and without him, this offense would struggle to find consistency. He finished with the lowest receiving yard and touchdown total of his career. Yet, with 823 receiving yards, Kelce nearly doubled Eagles TE Dallas Goedert’s receiving yard total on the season. Goedert has been consistent in the Eagles’ offense, but his numbers and importance cannot be compared with Travis Kelce’s.

Offensive Line

Both teams have amazing offensive lines, but they also have a weakness. The Eagles’ main weakness of the line comes at right guard with Mekhi Becton. Weakness may be a strong word because the Eagles’ offensive line is dominant, but Becton can still be exposed at times and will be a big focus in the Super Bowl. The tackles on the Chiefs O-line are their biggest weakness. RT Jaawan Taylor has become very consistent this season, and although this should stay true in the Super Bowl, the Eagles’ defensive line is fantastic, and Taylor could have a challenging game. The left tackle position may be the Chief’s most significant issue on the roster. This spot has been a revolving door all season, and the Eagles will attack it on defense. The strengths of each line are very comparable, and they are incredibly talented, but the Chief’s issues are too much of a worry.

On paper, the Philadelphia Eagles have the better offensive position groups with a fantastic running game, a great receiver core, and a dominant line. The question now is, will that be enough to beat the Chiefs led by Patrick Mahomes?
