Derrick Rose Takes Away Own Basketball Duties in Honest Admission After Focus on Alternate Sport

Opening up a pop shop for a day to thank the fans. Plus collaborating with Adidas to convert Simeon to the first Rose school, Derrick Rose is constantly on the move during his post-retirement life. Apart from teaching his son hooping, it seems the Bulls legend has reconnected with a sport that he used to play. And he is making sure to express his love for the sport and people playing it to the fullest.

The game is Chess, and the person who he is recently admiring in his story is none other than Magnus Carlsen. To appreciate the GrandMaster, D-Rose added a story of his first game of the quarter-finals at the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour 2025. Pooh added a screenshot of the YouTube live of the World No 1’s game and wrote, “DAY 3 OF GREATNESS.” Indeed, it was a great win for Carlsen as he required only 23 moves to dispatch Uzbekistan GM Nodirbek Abdusattorov in Game 1 of the quarter-finals.

But the start on day 1 wasn’t great. Carlsen was off to a poor start, losing three games out of five, including two in a row. He bounced back with two wins and a draw on Saturday, including a victory over World Champion D Gukesh. That’s why Derrick Rose is impressed by the Norwegian chess grandmaster. This is not the only time he has shown love, not only for chess but for Magnus Carlsen as well.

His latest Instagram post also highlights his love and respect  “I dream about this game. I’m obsessed with this game just like I was with basketball. Any time I’m feeling stress or if I can’t sleep I get on chess.com to relieve myself from that energy.” For Carlsen, he wrote, “Peace and love to Magnus, Jan and Jason. Thank you! You are helping me show that I’m more than a Hooper and helping me show who I really am even tho hoop is in my name. It’s just apart of the story.”

In a friendly banter, Derrick Rose even called out Victor Wembanyama for a game. The Spurs superstar played for an hour, at the SW corner of Washington Square Park. Even though it was raining, he ended with a 2-2 record.

Post playing for an hour, Wemby added on X, “Thanks for everyone who pulled up in the rain.” But he did not stop there and wrote another tweet addressing all the players in the league.“We need an NBA players only Chess tournament, proceeds go to the charity of choice of the winner.”

This tweet from Wemby is similar to what Derrick Rose is trying to do. “Rose Chess. The Rose Club. This is a chess club I’m starting up, bro. Like getting kids to like critically think, bro. The only time kids critically think is when they about to cause harm on the m———-r. ” In a podcast last year, the Bulls legend was very keen on starting the chess league.

The youngest MVP had announced his high-stakes ‘Chesstival’ tournament back in 2023. However, the tournament never came to fruition. This year could be the time when it actually takes place. We will eventually fight out who the winner is between Wemby and D-Rose.
