Stampede-like situation at New Delhi railway station; 15 injured

Several people lost their lives and many were injured after a stampede broke out at the New Delhi railway station late on Saturday evening. Fifteen people, including three children, lost their lives and 10 others were injured, said chief casualty medical officer of the LNJP Hospital as per ANI.

A huge rush of Maha Kumbh travellers triggered chaos on platform numbers 14 and 15 leading to the accident, said sources.

PM Narendra Modi in a tweet on X said: “Distressed by the stampede at New Delhi Railway Station. My thoughts are with all those who have lost their loved ones. I pray that the injured have a speedy recovery. The authorities are assisting all those who have been affected by this stampede.”

Reports suggest the rush was linked to train services for the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj. Northern Railway CPRO Himanshu Upadhyay said the heavy crowd led to passengers pushing each other, causing injuries.

Several passengers claimed many women fainted due to suffocation as crows surged.

The stampede occurred around 9:55 pm, prompting an immediate emergency response. Four fire tenders were dispatched to assist with relief efforts, Delhi Fire Services (DFS) chief Atul Garg confirmed.

According to the deputy commissioner of police (railway), the overcrowding was exacerbated by multiple delayed trains, including the Swantrata Senani Express and Bhubaneshwar Rajdhani Express, with passengers crowding platforms 12, 13, and 14. “As per CMI, every hour 1,500 general tickets were sold by railways, causing the station to become overcrowded and uncontrollable,” the officer said.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated on X that the situation was brought under control. “Delhi Police and CRPF personnel have reached the spot, and the injured have been taken to hospitals. Special trains are being run to tackle the sudden rush,” he said.
