Gran Turismo 7 Is Getting A Mercedes Unimog

Gran Turismo 7 has just had seen perhaps its strangest inclusion yet, with a new content update introducing a Type 411 Mercedes Unimog. No, we hadn’t expect to type those words just a short while ago — but we are delighted.

We had a feeling it’d be the case when series creator Kazunori Yamauchi upheld his usual tradition of posting the silhouettes of new cars coming to GT7. At the back was a silhouette of a not-so-little truck that looked suspiciously like a Unimog.

That turned out to be the case. More specifically, it’s a 1962 example of the rugged vehicle. That means it’s powered by a 1.8-litre diesel engine good for… 29bhp. Yes, 29. Rated at 32.4 for performance points as standard, it has the lowest PP of any vehicle in the game. Right now, there are no engine swaps for it – but expect that to change with future updates.

Joining the Unimog have been two more conventional options. There’s a German compatriot in the form of a first-generation BMW Z4. This one is this 3.0-litre straight-six version, which has previously appeared in GT4, 5 and 6.

Alongside that is a 1988 Peugeot 205 GTI. Being a later GTI, the virtual rendition uses the more sought-after 1.9-litre engine for a healthy 128bhp. Hopefully, this is the first of more ‘80s hot hatches to come to GT7 – a genre we feel the game could do with more representation in.

Beyond the three cars, this is a pretty light content update. There are no new tracks coming or even Scapes locations.

An Extra Menu focusing on Peugeot has been added alongside the 205 GTI, there’s three more events in World Circuits and in-development Sophy AI has now been enabled at Monza.

There are a handful of new engine swaps this time around, most exciting of which is the option to put a Suzuki Vision GT Group 3 V8 into a Swift Sport. You can also drop the Subaru Impreza WRC’s EJ20 into a 22b and GC8 Type R, a Ford Focus Group B (GT7’s fictional creation, not some mad time traveller) engine into Escort and Sierra Cosworths plus a Mitsubishi Evo rally unit into a Mazda Demio.

GT7’s 1.56 update is now live and available as a free download on both PlayStation 4 and 5.
