Longest Kiss in History Ends in Heartbreak: Couple Who Hold Record Give Relationship Update
The couple who hold the world record for the longest kiss have revealed they are no longer together.
Ekkachai Tiranarat and his wife Laksana, from Thailand, made history in 2013 when they kissed for an incredible 58 hours and 35 minutes, breaking the Guinness World Record.
However, during a recent appearance on the BBC Sounds podcast Witness History, Ekkachai shared that they have since separated. Despite the split, he said he remains “very proud” of the record they set together.
He recalled the difficult conditions of the competition, which required them to sustain the kiss even during bathroom breaks and pass water between their mouths. Ekkachai admitted that the experience wasn’t as romantic as it might sound.
“I am very proud. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience,” he told host Megan Jones on the podcast before adding, “We spent a long time together, and I’m trying to remember the good memories and that we did this together.”
Ekkachai and Laksana were also two-time winners of the contest. They first set the record in 2011, lasting 46 hours and 24 minutes.
Interestingly, they hadn’t planned to compete in the 2011 contest, which was set just before Valentine’s Day. Laksana had recently recovered from an illness, and Ekkachai had planned a vacation for a change of scenery. However, the lure of a 50,000 Thai Baht prize (around £1,200) and a diamond ring convinced them to participate.
Things didn’t start smoothly, though. Ekkachai nearly fainted shortly after arriving at the Royal Garden Plaza shopping mall in Pattaya, Thailand, where the event took place.
“There were a lot of people there, there were around 14 couples competing and a lot of media hovering around them. I felt like I was going to faint, some of the spectators handed me an inhaler to support me along the way,” he said.
Despite the rough start, the couple powered through, but the strict rules of the competition were a shock. Ekkachai was stunned to learn that they had to keep their lips locked at all times, stay awake, and remain standing without any support. Even adult nappies or incontinence pads were banned.
