Are the Titans Locked Into Cam Ward As the No. 1 Pick?

Over the past decade, Titans fans have endured unsteady quarterback play, with Zach Mettenberger, Marcus Mariota, Ryan Tannehill, and Will Levis under center. While Tannehill put together a couple of solid seasons, Tennessee hasn’t had a reliable quarterback of the future in quite some time.

As a result, the smart money has been on the team picking a quarterback, with either Miami’s Cam Ward or Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders looking like the most likely candidates to go No. 1 overall.

Ward, 22, played for three different schools at the collegiate level, throwing for 4,319 yards and 39 touchdowns as a senior with the Hurricanes.

Sanders, the son of NFL Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, threw for 7,364 yards in his two seasons manning the Buffaloes.

Veteran Titans reporter Jim Wyatt recently took to social media to inform fans that the Titans have canceled their upcoming private workout with Sanders.

After yesterday’s Colorado Pro Day, @Titans brass met with Shedeur Sanders’ camp and the parties have agreed to cancel the upcoming private workout.

The Titans have seen 4 years of game film, scouted multiple games, and now attended a Pro Day they described as very impressive.

The decision to cancel Sanders’ private workout all but confirms that Tennessee is taking Ward. This had already been gaining momentum in recent weeks, but now it seems like a foregone conclusion.

Former NFL QB Chase Daniel quickly chimed in, stating that the cancellation means that all roads point to Ward being the Titans’ pick at No. 1.

“Cam Ward locked as #1 pick,” he posted.

Veteran NFL draft analyst Todd McShay provided a deeper explanation, adding that he believes Sanders might be an option for the New York Giants at No. 3.

“So the Titans have respectfully canceled private workouts with Travis Hunter and Shedeur Sanders, making it all but official they will take Cam Ward No. 1. And now I’m starting to hear more and more about Hunter to Cleveland at No. 2. That would mean Abdul Carter vs. Shedeur for the Giants at No. 3. ***Not a difficult decision IMO.”

Dane Brugler of The Athletic echoed this sentiment that Ward will be a Titan.

If Ward is the pick, the Titans must turn their focus to improving their wide receiver corps to surround him with weapons. The Titans’ top three options as of today would be veterans Calvin Ridley, Treylon Burks, and Van Jefferson.

While Ridley has put together back-to-back 1,000-yard receiving seasons, Burks has caught just 53 passes in his first three seasons in the league. The Titans signed Jefferson this offseason, but the fifth-year pro only hauled in 24 receptions in 17 games with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2024.

The Titans currently have nine picks in the 2025 NFL Draft:

  • Round 1, Pick 1
  • Round 2, Pick 35
  • Round 4, Pick 103
  • Round 4, Pick 120 (from SEA)
  • Round 5, Pick 141
  • Round 5, Pick 167 (from KC)
  • Round 6, Pick 178
  • Round 6, Pick 188 (from DAL)
  • Round 7, Pick 239 (From GB)

The 2025 NFL Draft takes place April 24-26. PFSN’s latest seven-round mock draft also has the Titans projected to take Ward at No. 1 overall.
