In a candid interview, Puneet Chhatwal, CEO of Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL), shared his professional journey, industry insights, and aspirations for the future. From fostering lasting relationships across borders to revitalizing IHCL’s legacy, Chhatwal’s narrative is one of resilience, innovation, and deep cultural connection.
Chhatwal regularly travels globally, including Paris, to meet investors, maintaining strong international connections developed during his European career. Reflecting on his time as CEO of Deutsche Hospitality and his decision to return to India, he said, “I build genuine, lasting friendships, not just networks.” This ethos shaped his leadership approach at IHCL, where he took the helm in 2017 during challenging times.
Acknowledging IHCL’s financial struggles due to the 2008 global financial crisis and the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, he described the company then as a “sleeping beauty” with untapped potential. Under his leadership, IHCL implemented its “Aspiration 2022” plan, transitioning from losses to profitability. Chhatwal emphasized inclusion by expanding the leadership team from 10 to 35 members, catalyzing transformation. “The only way was up,” he noted, highlighting the morale boost this inclusive approach brought.
Chhatwal spoke proudly of IHCL’s commitment to community during the pandemic, providing meals and accommodations for frontline workers while retaining all employees. “We lead by example, and others follow,” he remarked, emphasizing the Tata Group’s legacy of balancing profits with social impact.
Looking ahead, Chhatwal envisions growth anchored in India, expanding Taj Hotels in key international markets like Paris, Zurich, and Vienna. He remains optimistic about India’s economic potential, crediting its demographic dividend and stable political environment. “India is the happening place,” he declared, emphasizing the importance of cultural and regional adaptation in global expansion.
Puneet Chhatwal’s leadership exemplifies a blend of tradition and innovation, steering IHCL toward a promising future. By fostering inclusive leadership, addressing societal needs, and capitalizing on India’s growth, Chhatwal reinforces the global allure of IHCL and its flagship Taj brand. His journey underscores that success lies in relationships, resilience, and a vision that bridges local and global perspectives.
