Manual 992.2 Porsche 911 Carrera Seems Likely

Manual 992.2 Porsche 911 Carrera Seems Likely

When the facelifted, 992.2 Porsche 911 was launched, for a lot of people, the subject of gearboxes inevitably arose. You’re not going to get one in a GTS due to its use of the new hybrid system, but what about the standard Carrera and a possible future Carrera S? Despite the demand for stick-shifting versions of 911s being low (GT3 and its ilk aside), it seems likely Porsche will make a manual 992.2 Carrera.

Speaking to vice president for the 911 and 718 model lines Frank Moser at the launch of the 2024 Porsche 911, we brought up the manual question. Moser confirmed what we already knew – a manual GTS simply isn’t going to happen. “A manual gearbox is not possible with the hybridisation because we have the PDK with the e-motor,” he said.

But what about in the Carrera or a possible Carrera S? “We have good ideas,” Moser said. That’s far from confirmation, but it gives cause for optimism. The 3.0-litre engine used in the Carrera has been updated with turbos pinched from the old GTS and an intercooler from the 911 Turbo, but the bare bones of the engine remain the same, so fitting the same seven-speed manual used by the 992.1 should be perfectly feasible.

When asked about the missing Carrera S and whether or not we saw it, Moser remained coy, but again, didn’t rule it out. “Give us a little more time and we will see what’s happening,” he said. “What’s happening” might well include a Carrera T as well as a Carrera S.

Updated versions of cars like the 911 GT3 are likely, too, plus the Turbo, and maybe the Dakar. As for the 992.2 911s you can buy, we’ve driven them and will deliver our full verdict when the embargo drops in early July.
